Public Lecture on the Psychology of Winning at Health Sciences University
On Wednesday 29th January, the Vice-Chancellor of the Health Sciences University, Professor Lesley Haig, will be delighted to welcome students, staff, alumni and members of the public onto HSU’s Bournemouth campus on Parkwood Road to attend the next lecture in the Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Inaugural Lecture series.
In this lecture Professor Stewart Cotterill, Professor of the Psychology of Human Performance, will be exploring the psychology of winning and performing under pressure.
This event is designed for anyone with an interest in performance; from sport performers and musicians to those pursuing careers in medicine, business, or the military. It may also be of interest to parents, coaches, and teachers of talented children, who are looking to foster excellence in young athletes.
Professor Cotterill, who has worked in the field of sport and performance psychology for 25 years, will discuss the similarities in how the brain operates across different performance environments. These include diverse fields, such as sports, music, the performing arts, medicine, business, emergency services, and the military.
His talk will reveal key lessons that can be drawn from these environments, providing insights into how individuals can succeed in their specific field. He will discuss the psychological factors that are crucial to success, and how these can be trained and developed.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the mental strategies that can enhance performance and the secrets to thriving under pressure—skills that are essential for anyone looking to make the most of their talents.
The lecture will take place from 7pm and last approximately one hour. Attendees are then invited for refreshments in the campus bar, Togglers.
Vice-Chancellor of the Health Sciences University, Professor Lesley Haig, said: “We are delighted that Stewart will be presenting his research into performance psychology and that we are able to open this lecture up to our local community. This is a fascinating subject and one that is relevant to all of us, in terms of achieving our potential.
“One of our key aims as a University is to be an anchor institution for knowledge exchange within our local community and this is a great example of that. We hope to welcome lots of visitors into our health sciences community for this event and share our campus with them.”
The Professorial Inaugural Lecture series provides an opportunity both for Health Science University’s professors to inspire audiences with their career insights and/or research and for audiences to influence future research and professional developments.

Professor Cotterill’s lecture is the second in the Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series at Health Sciences University. Further lectures will follow in 2025 and details will be published on the University website.
