What are Degree Apprenticeships?

Degree and Higher Degree Apprenticeships allow you to work in your current role while studying part-time, combining practical, on-the-job experience with academic learning through a mix of online and university-based study. Developed by the Government, employers, and universities, Degree Apprenticeships are open to anyone over 18, whether you’re starting out or looking to change or progress in your career. The cost of the apprenticeship is covered by your employer and the Government, so you won’t need to take out a loan or pay tuition fees. Depending on the level, they can take up to five years to complete. A key benefit is the ability to earn while you learn, maintaining financial security while gaining a degree and valuable work experience.

What will I be required to do at University during my apprenticeship?

Our apprenticeships include a mandatory study time each week, for a minimum of 6 hours a week (based on a minimum 30 hours a week contract). This will include a mixture of in person, online, and self-directed study and counts as your Off-The-Job Training (OTJ). During this time, you will develop the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) necessary to complete your apprenticeship. For the rest of the week, you will be based at your workplace, where you’ll engage in planned learning activities. Both the Health Sciences University and your employer are responsible for ensuring you attend your OTJ training, so it’s recommended that you plan any annual leave around your university schedule.

If you have prior training that aligns with your apprenticeship requirements, it may count toward your course. We will assess your record of prior learning (RPL) before you start the program, which could exempt you from certain units of the apprenticeship. This will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

You will need to provide evidence of all your OTJ training through our e-portfolio system. After completing your apprenticeship training, you will need to pass an End Point Assessment (EPA) to demonstrate that you have met the required KSB standards. EPA formats vary by course, and detailed information is available on each apprenticeship course page.
