Overview
This unit aims to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to understand the complex nature and to lead on, or be involved in, design and development for either an academic or practice-based educational intervention for health and/or social care practitioners or service users/patients or other interested parties.
This includes facilitating learning around philosophical underpinning and research related to good practice for effective curriculum/educational intervention design and development; learner experience and learning, teaching, and, where relevant, assessment strategies to meet the needs of the learners.
The aim is to support you towards development of a relevant educational intervention/curriculum based on an appropriate selected topic and targeted towards a specific learner group that will be presented at a simulated internal ‘validation’/’approval’ event.
The unit aims to explore complexities of building educational interventions from planning to delivery that will offer effective learning and teaching with a focus on health and/or social care education.

What You’ll Learn
Designing curricula and educational interventions requires a foundation in current research and theoretical perspectives, incorporating design models, influential factors, and critical appraisal and project management skills. This process must consider the specific contexts of both workplace settings and educational institutions to create programs that are relevant and effective.
Teaching models, such as the ABC Learning Design (ABC LD) framework, along with diverse approaches like work-based education, enhance learning for health and social care professionals. Development of academic courses for these practitioners often include competency-based strategies to ensure they meet the standards of professional practice.
By building on prior experiences and advancing through targeted educational interventions, practitioners progress in their learning journeys. Educational programs should also promote interprofessional collaboration, leadership, mentoring, and professionalism, addressing the specific needs of both service providers and patients.
Standalone unit 20 credits Level 7.
