Jaime Salcines Gomez-Pardo Sailing

Jaime Salcines studied the MSc Sports Rehabilitation and Therapy course at Health Sciences University. He tells us more about his experience of studying with us and how he was able to balance sailing competitively alongside his studies due to the support of staff at HSU.

Journey To Studying Sports Rehabilitation

“I studied for an undergraduate degree in Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science at Southampton Solent University. I learnt a lot during this time and gained incredible experience.

“I was also able to pursue my passion for sailing where I compete full-time, and I have participated in the European and World championships.

“Sport, specifically sailing, has always been a big part of my life. As a result, I have experienced and witnessed various injuries throughout my career.

“I have needed to go through rehabilitation myself when I have been injured. Through this, I realised that an understanding of my injuries was crucial to reducing my time off in sailing, so I started asking all the time about my injuries and how to prevent them from happening again.”

Valuable Range Of Skills

“My experience in MSc Sports Rehabilitation and Therapy at HSU allowed me to gain a valuable range of manual therapy and rehabilitation skills to get a better understanding of each injury.

“I loved the clinical skills module as we were taught to hone our clinical reasoning skills to determine a thorough assessment, diagnosis and injury rehabilitation plan for various pathologies.

“I also loved the rehabilitation module as it allowed us to treat and go through exercises for each type of injury.

“The course improved my knowledge of the rehabilitation world and has also provided me with more confidence when treating a patient, which was tested in the placement module which I loved every single minute of.”

Student Experience

“My student experience at HSU was really pleasant, as everyone is there to help you. As it is a smaller university, all the teachers know who you are which I think is important.

“My personal growth throughout the course was incredible. I left feeling prepared to start my working life whilst also continuing to compete in sailing at a high level.

“My biggest growth during the course came when I was completing placement hours and my dissertation whilst also training full-time for the sailing World Championship in Cowes. This was tricky but the university and my supervisor supported me all the way and allowed me extra time so I could get a good result in the sailing Championship as well as in my academics.”

Ambitions For The Future

“My goal is to open my own clinic in my hometown in Spain. I want to provide a good level of health care for athletes and non-athletes where the client will leave my clinic with a smile and be pain-free.

“This degree allowed me to put a lot of hours of practice into this field and be a member of the BASRat association which has given me a lot of job opportunities.”
