On Thursday 23rd May, AECC University College will be inviting students, staff, alumni and members of the public to attend an evening lecture by Professor Richard Brown.

This lecture will launch the University College’s Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series. The series will provide an opportunity both for AECC UC’s professors to inspire audiences with their career insights and/or research and for audiences to influence future research and professional developments.

Professor Richard Brown is a Visiting Professor at AECC University College (AECC UC) and Secretary-General of the World Federation of Chiropractic.

His lecture will explore the benefits of evidence-based, people-centred, interprofessional and collaborative health care to patients – particularly within the context of treating low back pain, frequently cited as the greatest cause of years lived with disability globally.

The event will begin at 6.30pm with refreshments. Professor Brown’s lecture will begin at 7pm and last for an hour. There will be an opportunity for Q&A/discussion after the lecture.

At AECC UC, we are committed to contributing to society through our public engagement activities in which we share our knowledge, resources and skills with the public and listen and learn from the different communities with which we engage. Therefore, during the event, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of AECC UC, Professor Kevin McGhee will formally sign the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) Manifesto for Public Engagement. This will publicly affirm, celebrate and support AECC UC’s public engagement activities and commitment.

NCCPE Co-director, Paul Manners, said: “I very much welcome AECC University College as a new signatory of the Manifesto of Public Engagement,  declaring their ongoing commitment to meaningful engagement and inclusive knowledge. We’re also thrilled to see the occasion marked with a formal signing by Deputy VC, Prof Kevin McGhee, at such a prestigious event for AECC UC”.

Professor Lesley Haig said: “We are delighted to be launching our Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series here at AECC University College and Professor Richard Brown is the ideal person to deliver our first lecture. The session promises to be thought-provoking and will no doubt be of interest to members of the public, as well as staff and students of AECC UC.

“As a specialist health sciences university, we are eager to develop and nurture our relationships within the local community. We are proud to be situated in Boscombe and we are committed to making educational opportunities and high-quality public talks accessible to our local community. Signing the NCCPE Manifesto is an important milestone in this commitment.”

Professor Brown said: “I am honoured to be the inaugural speaker at this series of professorial lectures. AECC University College is an institution that is dear to my heart and it’s always a pleasure to return.”

About Professor Brown’s Lecture
Committing to an EPIC Future

Healthcare is constantly evolving. Advances in technology, enhanced diagnostic capability and improvements in the way that killer diseases are tackled through vaccination, antibiotics and other public health measures, have led to a drop in child and maternal mortality and an increase in life expectancy in almost every nation on the planet.

Despite people living longer, there is evidence that people are not experiencing a corresponding increase in healthy life years. Low back pain alone is the greatest cause of years lived with disability on the planet. Social isolation and loneliness are driving surges in mental health issues. Frailty and balance problems give rise to falls and fractures.

In the midst of the global health crisis in the UK and beyond, ever more informed patients are demanding non-drug, non-surgical healthcare. They are seeking natural approaches that incorporate nutrition, lifestyle and manual medicine. They demand shared decision making and care delivered in their communities.

The public is after care that is evidence-based, people-centred, interprofessional and collaborative – or EPIC for short. This professorial lecture will describe how a commitment to the EPIC pillars will see chiropractors flourish and be key contributors to happier, healthier and more active lives.
